Helpful Suggestions for Survivors
I’m concerned about…
Coping
Many people who have gone through the traumatic experience of a sexual assault are fearful about their reactions following the abuse. It can feel like you are “losing it” or “going crazy,” but here are a few common reactions for victims:
- Feeling – numb, shocked, guilt, shame, embarrassment, disoriented, helplessness, denial, depressed, disgust, fearful, anxious, confused, angry, etc.
- Thinking – Did this really happen? I shouldn’t be so upset. What could I have done? I don’t know what to think. Why can’t I cry? Why can’t I think straight? What did I do to cause this to happen? I don’t want to be alone., etc.
- Therapy can be advantageous in improving your ability to cope with a recent or past rape or other concerns. Come in during Walk-In hours or schedule an appointment with a therapist at Baylor Counseling Services, and we can discuss your situation and needs.
Privacy
Privacy following an assault is often a concern for survivors. You likely feel ashamed about what has happened to you. You may feel damaged or dirty or exposed. Please know if you contact us at Baylor’s Counseling Services, we will respect your desire for privacy and will gladly explain our rules for confidentiality to you over the phone or in person.
Safety
Regardless of where your assault took place, you may notice you feel unsafe at times even when you are actually safe. You may notice you are easily startled when you’re alone, or you may feel unsafe even when you’re around other people after an assault. If you would like to talk to an advocate or a therapist, Baylor Counseling Services staff would be happy to discuss safety planning and other options with you. However, if you feel unsafe due to an actual potential threat to your safety on campus, contact Baylor PD (or another police department if appropriate) to discuss your situation and options.
Recovery
Each person and assault is unique, so there is no definitive answer. Your journey towards healing will involve on a variety of factors (relationship to perpetrator, dynamics of the assault, your willingness to confront the pain, etc.), but have hope that recovery is possible! With support, counseling, and dedication to the recovery process, you can heal from sexual assault and go on to have a happy life and healthy relationships.
